I found a Wallet on Sydney Train….

Yesterday, there was someone looking for me in my workplace. I wondered who it was. As soon as I saw, it was him………

Last week, I was returning back to my room on Sydney Train. I was about to sit on the middle of the upper compartment where I usually but today it was different scenario. There was a wallet on it and there was no one on that compartment.

I was in Dilemma. Couple of thoughts rose on my mind.

Should I take the wallet with me?

Why should I care?

What about giving it back to the respective person?

What if I will be suspected for the wrong doing?

What about being ethical?

What if it was your wallet?

Well, those questions were hard to tackle at that moment but I said to myself that I need to return this wallet to the respective person.

I picked up the wallet, put it in a side and wait for a moment to cool down myself.

After a minute, I just checked the wallet to figure out if there could be any contact address so that I could return it to its owner.

There was couple of bank cards, small notes, some cash, opal card, photo ID but none of them have any contact number. Well, I did found his living address. So, I was thinking about posting the wallet to that address.

In the next station, an old man came and started searching here and there. I watched him for some minutes and I felt like he was searching for that wallet.

Are you looking for your wallet? – I asked him.

‘Oh….. Thank you very much. I was so worried that I thought I almost lost it.”, he replied.

Further, he kept on saying,” I have so many important stuffs over here which would take me long time to recover hadn’t I not found it.”

Thank you for your Honesty. Now, my faith on human being has been raised.”

No worries.” I replied.

Could you please provide me your address so that I could send you some thank you as an appreciation.” – he

Thank you very much for that but I am OK. Just make sure that everything is fine with your wallet.” – I

As he insisted, I just gave him the address of my work place and he went away.

Thank you card from him.

He just gave me a warm hug. It felt like I have done so much for him. He took out a thank you card, wrote my name on it and gave me with deep sense of fulfillment.

And it made my day……….

One of the best day of my life.

A year in Australia

Time is continuous. It never stops even if we feel like that everything is as usual.

Let me Congratulate first…… My first year in Australia

It’s been a year in Australia and I feel like how fast the time passed away here in Australia. It feels like I was here a day before but the reality is it’s a year ago.

Wow, isn’t it amazing?

As time passed away, we keep on changing and so as the life changes. At this moment, I believe that I have really improved my life one step further in the sense like communication, public speaking, critical thinking, team work, networking, academic, leadership, time management, self awareness and so on. It’s not a one day change or effect. It’s continuous process and I have really worked hard to improve my interpersonal skills by involving in the Uni Activities.

Life is a journey – a journey where we keep on learning and improving ourselves better than before. Travelling to Australia and studying here has really given me a new vision in my life. As the culture between Australia and my country Nepal is completely different and it’s how we learn intercultural skills.

From Friends to Mate,

From How are you to Ha wa ya?

From all right to No worries

It’s how we get connected with Australian culture.

Well, it is really one of the productive year of my life. Hope this year will be more productive.

Sometimes it’s not all about getting paid, it’s about experiences.

It is around 12: 30 am. All the lights are off and I am lying on the bed ready to sleep. But something deep in my heart, I feel like I should share this in my blog. So, I got up, took my laptop and logged into my blog.

The past two days were one of the most productive days of my life ever since I came here in Sydney. Especially, today, I was more confident and more interactive that I have never been before. Truly speaking, I am an introvert.

When I go back to my past life, I felt like I really missed so much of thing due to being an introvert. I was basically a shy and really struggled hard to communicate with the stranger. The more important, I hardly shared my feelings with others due to which I was becoming so hard that it felt like there was no such feeling, no expression and moreover no Joy. But what I have learned in this two days is to connect with the people, to enjoy with the feeling and to communicate confidently. I know there is still more to learn and I am sure I will.

Yesterday and Today, there was an orientation session for the new international students in CQ university and I was a part of volunteering.

DAY 2 Orientation

DAY 1 Orientation

Events stall in Orientation

One of my friend asked me”, How much did Uni pay you?”

Me,” It’s free, a part of volunteering.”

Friend,” So, why are you wasting your time?”

It made me think for a while……… I didn’t get the answer at that moment.

But, today I have an answer.

Yes, the ability to work with the new people, the skill to communicate efficiently with the staffs and getting to know with the new peers that is what being paid and it is more than getting paid per hour.

Sometimes it’s not all about getting paid, it’s about experiences.

Time usually passed so fast that we eventually can’t realize how fast it passed away. I believe that university is not only the place to get the academic learning but it in fact is the place to learn the new skills for our career goals. It’s a part of learning experiences and I have a vision that every one of CQuni students will not only take academic certificates from CQU after they graduates but also take the learning experiences that values in their life ahead.

How to build a High Performing Team?

Did you ever feel like you are in the wrong team?

Or

Did you ever wish if your team could be a high performing?

Well, this happens and this happens in most of the team when the members are not committed. In fact, some even don’t know the objective of their team. Needless to say, working as a team player is one of the key skill in the professional world which most of the employer value. Furthermore, it’s not only about working as a team player, it in fact is a team work and building a high performing team.

So, here it is how the High Performing Team can be built:

  • Common purpose

The main objective of a team should be clear, relevant and significant. It should be achievable like SMART goal. Every member should accept the objective of the team.

  • Clear Roles

Each member should be clear about their roles and that of members. It creates a sense of responsibility. One can help other when needed.

  • Accepted Leadership

Someone from the team should be there to lead the team. He/She should serve the team and appreciate collective and diverse skills. If no one takes leadership, then it’s like a running vehicle without a driver.

  • Effective processes

In order to achieve the goal, the team should map and identify the key team and business processes that facilitate the problem solving. Every step should be clearly identified and described to the team members so that they can follow-up.

  • Solid relationship in the team

Solid relationship in the team can be built through high trust, acceptance, respect, understanding, commitment, support, collaboration, empowerment, constructive challenge.

  • Excellent communication

An easy way of communication among the team members can facilitate the members to straight talk about what they think, challenge and propose. But, it should be always in the right way.

Why Team Dysfunction?

Have you ever experienced a failure in your Team Work?

Well, many of us probably say Yes.

But the point here is have you ever tried to find out the particular cause of the failure?

The first thing many people usually do is to blame other members to be in the safe side.

But do you thing this is the right approach?

Needless to say, it might be difficult to build a cohesive team but it is not complicated.

Our Executive coach Phil Crenigan presented the Five Dysfunctions model by Patrick Lencioni in ” Executive Coach in Residence ” program organized by the CQUniversity. The purpose of this program is to provide postgraduate students with insights and strategies on developing a clear career plan and to prepare them for their entry into employment and the next chapter of their career. I was one of them and here, I would like to share my experiences with his strategies tool and how it can be beneficial to every one of us to build a high performing team.

Why the Team Dysfunction?

According to the Patrick Lencioni, the five major factors that any team could dysfunctions are due to

  1. Absence of Trust
  2. Fear of Conflict
  3. Lack of Commitment
  4. Avoidance of Accountability
  5. Inattention to Results

Fig: Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Absence of Trust

When team members are not genuinely open with each other about their mistakes and weaknesses, there is absence of Trust.

Fear of Conflict

Due to the absence of trust, team members hardly engage in brain storming and passionate debate of ideas. Rather, they are limited to veiled discussion and guarded comments.

Lack of commitment

When there is a conflict, then team members rarely commit to their decision.

Avoidance of accountability

Without commitment, even a clear plan of action could not work.

Inattention to results

When team members put their individual needs above than the team goal, then inattention to results occurs.

But remember that these five are not isolated one but in fact interrelated to each other. Presence of any one of them can lead to the dysfunction of team.
