Two important lesson from that 6 hours of walk

Back in 2016, when I was a site engineer in GTL Nepal, Dhangadhi, I usually visit newly built site for inspection. Since I was working in telecommunication industry, the interesting part was that I got a chance to travel to different places. That’s when I traveled to all nine district of Far Western Development. The non interesting part was that the telecom sites were built in the top hill side where it took me more than hours of long to reach the site.

I can still remember the day when I was heading to one of the newly built site in Darchula. The first day I could only reach to the base of the hill where the site was built. Since it was already evening when I reached there, I could not see the site properly but the driver dai who was with me showed the AV lamp light of the tower.

It’s far – I whispered.

The Next day, when I saw the site location, I was shocked. It was really too far at the top of the hill. I thought it would take me whole day to reach the site. I finished my breakfast and prepared for my journey.

After every step I took, I used to look up ward towards the site to make me feel good and try to know how much distance more do I had to walk, but unfortunately it seem too far. Even after one hour walk, when I felt that I might have walked too far but when I looked upward, the site location was still too far. That really made me frustrated as my legs was hurting so much. Sometime I even felt like giving up and returning back.

But something amazing thought came in my mind.

Inside my brain, I was thinking like – Hey Niraj, from next time, don’t look upward. Just keep walking and look backward.

I gave a try.

After walking continuously for one hour, I took rest and this time, I didn’t look upward, instead I looked downward and something amazing feeling came in mind. I felt like I walked very far away because the place where started my journey was too far from there. I even thank my leg for supporting me in every step of this journey.

From this journey, I learnt a valuable lesson in my life.

Life is not about looking into the future and getting worried about it. Instead, it’s about looking back, learning from the experiences and being thankful for whatever we have and wherever we are.

After six hours of walk, finally I reached the construction site at the top of the hill. It was one of the victorious moment in my life like climbing a Mount Everest. But one thing shocked me.

When I was on the base location, I thought the site location was the highest point of the hill and I could see all other places from there. But as I reached there, I saw other hills are higher than it.

It was also one of the learning moment of my life because every time we think that we will be happy if we get that position or get job in the big company and as soon as we reach there, we will feel that it is nothing and then we start to expect more than that. Instead of enjoying what we have, we become sad by looking at the things that we dons’t have.

Same was the my situation. Instead of enjoying the moment at the top of the hill, I was looking at other hill and wondering if I could be there.

Sharing Experience from my University Council election campaign

”Thank you everyone who voted me in University Council election. Though we couldn’t make to final but I believe we still can make our vision into reality because there is always a way……….. ”

One thing I am passionate about is helping other. My happiness come within when I am able to offer my helping hands to other. With a vision to make our university, a place where everyone is inspired to be what they want to be, I gave my nomination in the University Council Election. Well, my nominations was at the last half hour. I checked an email notification which was all about University Council Election and I just had half an hour to apply for the nomination.

At first, I thought I could not make it to the nomination since I only had half an hour left but something deep from inside heart said, you have to because I was looking for an opportunity to give something valuable to the University and it was one of the best platform. So, without any delay, I submitted my Expression of Interest and the next week, I got nominated as an Election Candidate.

Well, getting a nomination was not as challenging as it was to appeal for the vote with a cause. To be honest, I had no any plan for election campaign unless one of my friends Subash Koirala suggested me to actually face the voters and approach to them with a cause. That inspired me to actually carry out my election campaign and face the audience. Other important inspiring moment was one of my Professor Stephanie from Design it. One thing that struck in my mind from her is Just Do it and the ways will come across. Yes, it was true. As I started my election Campaign, different ideas were flourished in my mind and I happened to figure out the ways……

I started my campaign with A poster.

ptr

From sticking my poster in the notice boards of every floor of my University to the distributing in hand to the uni students and giving the speech in class, International cafe and uploading in the Instagram. Almost everyday, I carried out around two hour campaign where I talked individually with most of the students by going in the basement, in every level and standing in front of the lift in the ground level.

At an initial level, to be honest, there was a feeling like I need to win this election. But as I got connected with the different students, talking with them I found that nobody cares about the election. Most of them even don’t check their email and even if they do, they don’t go through. I tried to figure out why was that?

There were couple of reasons they shared with me. Some of them were:

  • They didn’t check their email so often.
  • They didn’t know the candidates personally.
  • No any candidates came to them for Votes.
  • Some them said they were not interested in Politics.
  • They had no idea about it.
  • They were busy in Assignment.

The first week campaign was so much frustrating to me because of all these reasons.

The second week, I changed my feeling of winning election to the making uni students aware of their right to vote. I believe everyone of Uni students have right to vote and they should use their right to vote for the right person in order to get the right result. So, now I was focused totally on making them aware of University Council Election and make sure that they use their right to vote.

One of the student asked me,” what you will do for the Nepalese student if you get elected?.”

My answers was pretty straight forward – ” I apologize that I am not here to work for Nepalese students and I am also not here to work for International student though I am an international student from Nepal. I am here actually to work for the university students. ” And I really mean it.

On the last two days of the campaign, there was feeling of Happiness within me. This was not because I would win the Election but this was because of the response I got from the others. Most of their response were that they voted and they will vote using their right to Vote. I feel like I did my part of job on making this election successful by involving as much students as I could.

One thing I could say with full confidence that I never forced other to vote me nor I showed them how to vote straight a way unless they asked me how to vote. My intention was not to get more votes as I said earlier. I have changed my perception from getting vote to making other aware of their right to vote. And I can proudly say that I did that.

Some of you might say, who said you to do or why you need to do?

Well, there was no one to force and make me do and I was not being paid as well. It was my own cause, my own desire to make this happen and my own passion to learn in everyday of my life.

At the end, I would like to apologize for all the Voters that I couldn’t make it to final but your believes and vote are always precious to me. I believe this is not only the way to make our vision into reality. There is always a way……..

Failure is not an obstacle, but it, in fact, is the inspiration to move forward…………..

And Lets move together to make it happen……

I found a Wallet on Sydney Train….

Yesterday, there was someone looking for me in my workplace. I wondered who it was. As soon as I saw, it was him………

Last week, I was returning back to my room on Sydney Train. I was about to sit on the middle of the upper compartment where I usually but today it was different scenario. There was a wallet on it and there was no one on that compartment.

I was in Dilemma. Couple of thoughts rose on my mind.

Should I take the wallet with me?

Why should I care?

What about giving it back to the respective person?

What if I will be suspected for the wrong doing?

What about being ethical?

What if it was your wallet?

Well, those questions were hard to tackle at that moment but I said to myself that I need to return this wallet to the respective person.

I picked up the wallet, put it in a side and wait for a moment to cool down myself.

After a minute, I just checked the wallet to figure out if there could be any contact address so that I could return it to its owner.

There was couple of bank cards, small notes, some cash, opal card, photo ID but none of them have any contact number. Well, I did found his living address. So, I was thinking about posting the wallet to that address.

In the next station, an old man came and started searching here and there. I watched him for some minutes and I felt like he was searching for that wallet.

Are you looking for your wallet? – I asked him.

‘Oh….. Thank you very much. I was so worried that I thought I almost lost it.”, he replied.

Further, he kept on saying,” I have so many important stuffs over here which would take me long time to recover hadn’t I not found it.”

Thank you for your Honesty. Now, my faith on human being has been raised.”

No worries.” I replied.

Could you please provide me your address so that I could send you some thank you as an appreciation.” – he

Thank you very much for that but I am OK. Just make sure that everything is fine with your wallet.” – I

As he insisted, I just gave him the address of my work place and he went away.

Thank you card from him.

He just gave me a warm hug. It felt like I have done so much for him. He took out a thank you card, wrote my name on it and gave me with deep sense of fulfillment.

And it made my day……….

One of the best day of my life.

Sydney Train life

One thing I hate most about Sydney Train is ” Why the heck it is so expensive?”

I hardly find it worth because most of the time, it was always delayed. And sometime it even cancelled the moving train on its way. Last Sunday, I was on my way to work and suddenly the Train officer noticed us that the train no more will travel further and we had to change our train from the next station. I was delayed by fifteen minutes on work.

Rest in Peace TAYYAB

” Birth and death are only the two things in our life which can’t be predicted.”

so true,

There was a Pakistani guy named Tayyab who worked for around one month where I am working now. Like me, he hardly used to talk with other. He was polite and honest.

Today, I got news that he suicide. He was lost in 17th April. He jumped into the Nepean river and his body was found nearby the river.

An unbelievable and unexpected news.

A heartbreaking news.

I still can feel his voice and remember the way he used to talk with me.

Rest in Peace Tayyab.
